Beautiful Sumatran female, from an island near the eastern coast of
northern Sumatra.
Juvenile male in the terrarium of Ewald Toenjes.
Large adult female, about 80-90 cm, gravid (April), from a location southwest
of Medan, North Sumatra. Other adult females from this location looked
similar, blueish-white against strongly yellow bars. However, there were also
females with mostly green scales, very similar to specimens from Thailand or
western Malaysia.
Adult female, about 70 cm, from the same population as the female above,
displaying more greenish coloration.
Adult male, (about 50-60 cm), from the same location as the two females above.
As mentioned elsewhere on this site, this male displays the characteristic
green coloration (including the ventral scales) frequently encountered in
Sumatra. This is less frequent with regard to males from western Malaysia and
Thailand. This male was captured in a sugar palm tree (Arenga pinnata), several
meters above the ground. Potential prey is abundant in these trees like geckos,
birds and squirrels.
Adult male, about 50-60 cm, from the same population as the animals above. It
was found in a guava tree in the late afternoon, about 3 m above ground, behind
a farmers house. Note the blueish-white belly and the relatively smaller red
dorsal marks, well in contrast to the male above. This pattern is very similar to
Thai and western Malaysian males.
Adult female, about 50 cm, from the vicinity of Medan. This beautiful specimen
features more dark elements of coloration on the back.
Subadult female from the vicinity of Medan. This specimen was probably
entirely green during the juvenile phase, as opposed to blueish juvenile females
that also occur in the same area.
Same animal as above, after shedding skin about 3 months later. Incredibly fast
and beautiful change!
Sumatran subadult female, approximately 2-3 years old, in transition to adulthood;
locality unknown.
